I just checked my credit report, and it's a 589! It said I have 0 negative items, and 27 items in good standing. About 10 out of the 27 items were student loans that added up to about $25,000, 2 of the items were credit cards that added up to $5000. I've never been late on any payments, and I have no idea why my credit rating is poor. Is it because of the ratio of how much I have in comparison to the lines of open credit?? Like, if you oh more than 50% of all your lines of credit, does that knock it down? I'm going to be paying off these credit cards very soon, how many points do you think it will increase once I pay them off? Thanks
thanks wizip for completely NOT answering my question.
First of all you have a lot of accounts — thats the biggest problem I see here. You should consolidate all your student loans into one — this will boost your score… also $5000 is a lot of debt to have… a big chunk of your credit score is calculated by what's know as the debt to credit ratio. You should never use more than 20% of your available credit.. This is also impacting your score. There are a lot of things you can do now to help though.. check it out…
# Know and Track Your Credit Score (be sure to sign up for the free trial of your credit score tracking listed below. It really helped my get my score up.)
# Never Miss a Payment, Starting Today
# Never use more than 20% of your Available Credit
# Keep Credit Cards that Have No Annual Fees Open For as Long as Possible
# Extend Your Credit Limit on Cards You Already Have before You Get New Ones
# Get Credit Cards that Have CashBack Rewards to Contribute to your Balance
# Transfer Your Balance to a Credit Card with a Lower Interest Rate and a Higher Available Credit-
# If You Think You Are Going to be FORCED to Pay a Bill Late Ask for an Extension or Payment Plan
# Take out a Small Personal Loan and Repay it Over a Year
# Ask Someone With Good Credit if They will Account Shadow you
If you credit score is low its probably time to fix it, and a good first step like I mentioned is to start tracking it — which you can do with some of the links below! =)
Good luck!

What happens to one's credit when the person's sole credit card is taken and used illegally? We're not sure how this will affect efforts to refinance, as this is my wife's only credit card. She will be receiving a replacement in the next week and will have an affidavit indicating that the charges were not hers.
Any suggested approaches to ensuring that her credit info is considered before the card was stolen and the account closed?
You really shouldn't have much of an impact, since the card is being re-issued. Basically you still have the same account, same history, same limit as the old card, just with a new number. She will need to be very careful about the fraudulent purchases. If the bank does not wave them, she could be held responsible. If she doesn't pay this will hurt her credit. To be on the safe side take the affidavit with you when you re-finance this will be your proof that if anything negative shows up, it wasn't yours.
My next question has to be how did they get her card. If a wallet was stolen, home broken into, mail stolen, keep in mind the other info this thief may have. Name, address, social, etc they may have more than enough to commit credit fraud,(Opening other lines in her name) it may be a good idea to sign up for a credit monitoring service for a little while.

i was given two options by the judge admit or deny. i denied then he stated me and the collectors need to talk to see if we can get it resolved, if not then it will be taking to court.
i went to court for a credit card debt and would like them to furbish proof of their claim. I believe they fabricated the latest payment. It is the state of florida. If i am able to … then how do i retrieve that form and whom do i submit it to? any info on wat steps to take would be grateful.
thanks for the responses. but how do i request discovery?!?! where can i retrieve the form and do i send it certified mail to their offices? i need to know where to get the form.
In civil litigation,(not criminal) you have a right to discovery regardless of admit or deny.
Admit would have meant that you agreed that you owed the debt, denied means either you don't owe the debt or that you dispute the amount.
I would talk to the lawyers on the other side and see if you can't offer them 1/2 of what they say you owe, and end the whole thing.
You could end up paying court costs if you push it to far.
IF you offer 1/2 they will come back with a counter offer at about 3/4.
They will also accept payments…..

The literature, fine print and figures all intimidate me. I don't really know which is cheaper and better for.
So what exactly should i focus on? What does APR mean?
Find one with the lowest (preferrably fixed) interest rate possible, no annual fee, and perhaps gives you cash back on purchases.
The APR is the Annual Percentage Rate, which is the rate of how much interest you will have to pay back for using credit. The APR and interest rate is not the exact same, but is so close that I don't try to differentiate the two.
You should pay attention to the interest rate; the fees for late payments, balance transfers, etc; and any notices or changes to your account that are sent.
