Can you not use a credit card after getting approved for it?
April 26th, 2009
About a week ago I was approved for the Chase Freedom card, and now that I think about it, I dont think I need it anymore. Is it going to be bad for me if I just keep it and dont use it at all or should I just go ahead and cancel it?
Don’t cancel it. Keeping that credit line open helps your credit score when it comes to your credit to debt ratio.
The only thing about keeping it is, they might cancel it on you with out your knowing about it if you don’t use it.

You don’t have to use it. A couple of things here. If there is an annual fee and you are not going to use it you may as well get rid of it. If there is no annual fee, keep the card. What this does is increase your level of available credit which means that any debt you care will be a smaller portion of your available credit being used. As a result, having a smaller percentage of available credit being utilized will improve you overall credit score.

Keep it but use it once every few months for gas or groceries and pay it off in full. It will help your available credit line and show a good history of on-time payments as long as you pay promptly. There’s nothing bad to having the card as long as you don’t abuse it.

If it doesn’t cost anything to keep it, keep it you never know why you might need access to the credit line (this is assuming you won’t access the credit line unless you really need it). If it does have some annual fee or something close it.
I think a Chase Freedom card has rewards so you might want to switch to using that card if it has better rewards than the way you currently pay. Even if you pay cash right now. If you pay cash, you might as well charge it, earn your reward, and pay off the card each month. We do it that way and get $20-$50 in free gas each month on our reward card.
